100 metres

The 100 metres is the classic short sprint in athletics, testing explosive speed, reaction, and acceleration over a straight course. It is one of the most iconic track events and is often regarded as the purest expression of sprinting. At Athens 1896, the event was contested in heats followed by a final, with the top two runners from each heat advancing. The race was run on the Panathenaic Stadium track under early Olympic conditions, and the final was held four days after the opening heats.
