The men’s 100 metres freestyle for sailors at the 1896 Olympic Games was an open-water race restricted to sailors of the Greek navy. Although eleven entrants were listed, only the three finishers are known to have started the race. Because the event was not open to the full international field, its place within the Olympic programme has often been treated as historically uncertain.
