High Jump

The high jump is a field event in which athletes attempt to clear a horizontal bar set at increasing heights without dislodging it. It tests explosive power, coordination, timing, and jumping technique, with success depending on both physical ability and precise control in take-off. At Athens 1896, the event was decided by progressive heights, with competitors continuing until only one remained successful at the top mark. As in other early Olympic field events, technique and rules differed in some respects from modern standards, but the basic objective remained the same: to jump higher than every rival.
