Pole Vault

The pole vault is a field event in which athletes use a flexible pole to lift themselves over a horizontal bar set at increasing heights. It combines speed, strength, coordination, and technique, requiring both an effective run-up and precise control in take-off and clearance. At Athens 1896, the event was contested under early Olympic conditions, with the bar raised progressively until the winner was determined. Although vaulting methods and equipment were very different from those used today, the essential challenge remained the same: clearing a greater height than every other competitor.
