The 110 metres hurdles is a sprint hurdles event that tests speed, coordination, and technique over a short distance. Athletes must combine rapid acceleration with efficient hurdling rhythm, making it one of the most technical sprint events.
At Athens 1896, it was contested in heats followed by a final, with the top runners from each heat qualifying. Only two athletes ultimately started the final, as Welles Hoyt and Frantz Reichel withdrew after qualifying, leaving Thomas Curtis and Grantley Goulding to contest the title. At Paris 1900, the event used heats, a repĂȘchage round, and a final, reflecting the experimental formats common in early Olympic athletics.
