Discipline: Field
he hammer throw is a field event in which athletes rotate and release a heavy metal ball attached to a wire and handle, aiming for the greatest possible distance. The event combines strength, balance, timing, and control through a series of turns inside the throwing circle.
At Paris 1900, the men’s hammer throw made its Olympic debut. It was contested as a final-only event on 16 July at Croix Catelan, with five athletes from two countries. The hammer was thrown from a nine-foot circle, and John Flanagan won with an Olympic-record throw of 51.01 metres, beginning a run of three consecutive Olympic titles in the event.
Chronological progression of Olympic records explicitly recorded for this event series.
