100 kilometres is an Olympic track cycling endurance event contested over a very long distance on the velodrome. Riders are classified by finishing order after covering the full race distance, making the event a severe test of stamina, pacing, and resistance to fatigue. In early Olympic cycling, such long-distance track races were more common than in the modern programme and reflected the endurance-focused character of late nineteenth-century velodrome competition.
