Discipline: Freestyle
500 metres freestyle is a middle-distance swimming event in which competitors race over 500 metres using any stroke, with freestyle representing the open-stroke form of competition. Final placings are determined by finishing order and recorded time, rewarding endurance, pacing, and efficient technique over a longer distance than the sprint events. In the early Olympic era, the event was contested in open water rather than in a standardized pool.
