100 metres freestyle for sailors is a special freestyle swimming event contested over 100 metres and restricted to sailors rather than the full open field of competitors. Final placings are determined by finishing order and recorded time, as in other freestyle races, but the event differs by its restricted eligibility. In the 1896 Olympic context, it was held in open water under the same improvised conditions as the other swimming events.
